Nomads Tour Saumur France June 1997
SAUMUR Loire France June Tour 1997
Two Victories over Saumur Cricket Club
Loading up very early morning in SW19 Jack amidst the flowers & plants A Hotel some stayed at Nomads take a drink
In 1977 Nomads made the first of several visits to the delightful small city of Saumur in the department of Maine et Loire best known for Cadre Noir to play the local cricket club founded by Krishna Lester with President Mick Jagger. The party set off by Minibus from Rus Mann's home in Wimbledon picking up the Howes en route to Ashford and a Channel Tunnel Crossing. After a tortuous route which took in the motorway madness of Paris and the rush hour of the University town at Tours we arrived in Saumur to find we were not booked into any Hotel. A Lester/Blumberg cock up.
Nevertheless in no time we were esconced in two hotels and were soon relaxed and drinking outside one of the hotels overlooking the River Loire.
The next morning we visited the Chateau and vineyard at nearby Chaintre managed by Krishna and were given the official tour and tasting followed by lunch back in the town and then off to the cricket ground.
Playing on the only grass square in France Nomads proved equal to the task and won comfortably. Matt Duggan posted a big hitting fifty after Kelvin Sutherland had struggled on the slow pitch for 49.Pikey and Burns put Saumur in a strong position to reach the modest total set but when they went the Saumur batting collapsed to the guile and skill of the visiting bowlers.
That evening we dined well at a restaurant of Krishna's recommendation and various bars and late night dancing clubs were enjoyed until dawn by several members including veterans Professor John White and Jack Hyams.
Jack travelled in and out of France on his wife's passport.
