Match 69 October 15th At Torrevieja Sports City 30/30 Nomads CC 162-11,30 overs(Green 28,Blumberg 20,V Singh 3-21,GR Panchal 3-15) lost to Torrevieja Invitation XI 168-10,26 overs(G Singh 103rt,R Panchal 28,K Smith 4-16) Wambeke Method revised There was a shortage of Nomads and Torrevieja cricketers so numbers were made up on both sides by mostly La Manga CC thanks to the efforts of George Wambeke. Ranjit Latchman and Michael Blumberg had met Torrevieja Supremo Graham Stanton at the hotel and he then guided us the Sports City where we helped hoist the mat onto a trolly and then lay it and stretch it and pin it down and so to the Gazebo. Eventually a complement of players had arrived much distracted by a singularly athletic lady quarter miler who first stretched prematch and then ran in magnificent style around the track once Nomads commenced batting. Whether she was the distraction or just the low or non existent bounce Nomads were soon in trouble at 44-5. Then a stand of 60 between the President and the Scorer restored the innings and some returnees took the total to 162. There being no refreshment at the interval and the Sports City cafe being closed the game was soon underway again. Nomads took two quick wickets but then G Singh who went on to score a century and Ravi Panchal made a big stand taking the score beyond 100. G Singh who should have been caught out, hit and mishit 12 sixes, some huge, taking good advantage of the short straight boundary before retiring. Ravi Panchal was caught by P Singh off Kevin Smith's bowling. This was pretty hard luck on Panchal as P Singh dropped several other catches during the innings. Wickets now tumbled requiring the return of G Singh who was well caught at mid wicket by M Singh off Kevin's bowling for a mere single this time. As the Torrevieja score was closing in on Nomads with some six overs still to be bowled Nomads skipper conferred with George Wambeke who confirmed that the 30 overs had to be bowled and then it was runs divided by wickets. However V Singh hit a couple of boundaries and duly walked off whereupon all the Singhs made haste to leave as they had to get to work on time. Nomads were declared the losers with five overs still to bowl. So those left then helped put all the equipment away and some four Nomads soon found themselves at a roadside bar quaffing thirstily as they discussed the somewhat bizarre day's cricket
Match 70 October 17th At Torrevieja Sports City 30/30 Torrevieja Invitation XI 166-15,30 overs(P Davis 56,Johnson 6-37) lost to Nomads CC 137-8,30 overs(Ormiston 49,N Singh 24,H Singh 3-14) Wambeke Method TI XI Average runs per wicket Torrevieja 11.07 Nomads CC 17.13 Nomads were strenghtened by the arrival of Bill Johnson, Oliver Croom-Johnson and Ross Ormiston so with three Singhs we were ten as were Torrevieja. Nomads won the toss and inserted Torrevieja who were soon reeling at 17-4 and 30-5 unable to deal with the guile of Oliver C-J and Bill J who took a sixfer. Torrevieja staged a recovery with George Wambeke and Paul David adding 40 yet 10 wickets had fallen for 100. Paul Davis took a liking to Ross Ormiston's bowling and with several returnees took the score to an unlikely 166-15. Davis was bowled by Ranjit Latchman for a most creditable fifty six. Nomads lost several early wickets and M Singh top edged the ball into his face and had to retire hurt. Ross Ormiston and N Singh added 60 so Nomads were 100-3 at a significant point. Ormiston was comicaly run out for 49. Scorer Nigel Green hit a couple of sixes and the President a four so that at 30 overs Nomads were 137-8 and on runs per wicket had won handsomely. So Nomads left Torrevieja with the series 1-1 and headed north to Albir L'Alfas del Pi to meet the rest of the tour party and consume a very unhealthy volume of alcoholic beverages at dinner and later at the Yellow Submarine. Comfortable win for Nomads Kevin Smith skipper of the day won the toss and elected to bat whereupon young Marcus Budgen on debut in Spain and the experienced charles Peerless added 100 for the 1st wicket at a moderate pace. Nomads had hoped to accelerate over the second twenty overs but decent bowling from the Forty Club and the unusually lush grass of the outfield thwarted this ambition. Kevin mindful of the difficulty Nomads have had in the past in bowling out Forty Club declared on 40 overs with 211 on the board and a personal milestone for Marcus who had hit his maiden century not only for Nomads and in Spain but ever!
After an excellent Cricket tea Nomads were soon taking wickets, Oliver accounting for two and Ravi Panchal for one. Marcus and Nigel Hussey then ran out numbers 5 and 6 reducing Forty Club to 53-5. Dutchman de Geer joined Geoff Evans and these two added 34 until the introduction of the limping John Hardy who after some eccentric opening balls then removed both these two batsmen and two more thereafter. Nigel Hussey completed the coup de grace having number 11 George Wambeke caught by Bill Johnson to give Nomads victory by 104 runs in good time to repair to the bar and celebrate at length. Nomads batsmen flounder on a fine sunny Autumn day at Albir Ranjit Latchman the skipper of the day duly won the toss and took the majority team view which was to bat thus spurning the President's advice that after two or more very late nights it is a high risk strategy to bat first. David Williams swung at the first wide half volley he received from Ben Fletcher and edged it to Paul Taylor at Gully. A cameo spell from Phil Pennick despite several no balls troubled yesterday's centurion Marcus and indeed he was bowled for 19 before Pennick retired from further involvement in the game! The opener's were out but worse was to follow as at 43-3 after Bill Johnson and Hugo Morris had battled away adding some 32 runs, disaster struck. For just as Bill had started to play some accomplished shots and looked settled for a good score so he was run out as the bowler helped a hard hit straight drive onto the stumps with Bill backing up. Having run out Bill, Waqar Ashra then dismissed Hugo the same over caught behind. 75-5 and the President's worse premonitions seemed to coming home to roost. Ravi Panchal with some elegant shots added 21 with Ross Ormiston but then the New Zealander fell victim to Waqar Ashraf. Panchal was batting well when he was bambozzled by veteran left arm slow bowler Paul Taylor to be caught by Harry Marshall. With James Dixon clean bowled by Mohammed this left Nomads reeling at 115-8. It was left to the skipper Ranjit Latchman and Kevin Smith to give the innings some credability with a stand of 37 before Kevin swung and missed and was stumped. Yesterday's opener Charles Peerless joined Ranjit and the last pair added 8 before the close. Ranjit Latchman had top scored with 32 not out. Nomads would have to bowl well to defend such a modest total. However the traditional fayre at tea put heart into Nomads bowlers Ravi Panchal(seam) and Bill Johnson(slow) and these two caused problems for Alfas's openers. Ravi claimed two wickets from his spell including the usually flamboyant Shafiq but Bill was unlucky to finish wicketless. At 50-2 the match was still a contest but Christian
Muñoz added 50 with the obdurate young Marshall before the latter fell to Nigel Hussey,100-3. When Muñoz also fell to Hussey at 127, Nomads briefly sensed that perhaps the game could be won. However the skipper removed Nigel replacing him with Marcus Budgen who did take another wicket but at some cost. David Williams had to go early so his place had been taken on the field by Ravi's brother Akash who then bowled a wicketless but tidy seven over spell. Kevin Laundon unimpressed with the Nomads bowling quickly hit four 4s and a six and the players were soon back in the clubhouse or outside drinking early for a second day running on a pleasantly warm autumn evening. Skipper of the day Charles Peerless eventually decided to bat. Nigel Hussey was soon out rather tamely whereupon Ranjit was curiously misjudged lbw,20-2. Budgen,Ormiston and Peerless all played cameos but got out when well set so Nomads were thankful for a few hearty blows from Nigel Green at the end to reach the paltry total of 161. Naturally a good tea followed but this did little to enhance Sporting Alfas's Sunday batsmen's prowess. Ross Ormiston bowled eight opening overs for 14 while Hussey took 2-34 at the other end. Had the President not missed once and dropped shortly after Alfas' Irish wicket keeper the innings may have never got anywhere. As it was he hit 46 and with some late order resistance were mighty close when the skipper at number 11 strode out to the pitch. At this point the President left with Marcus Budgen to take him back to the airport. When he returned 90 minutes later he was glad to learn that Nomads had won by 8 runs, the last wicket being taken caught and bowled by the skipper Peerless. Phew! Ross Ormiston hits his maiden Nomads fifty in Nomads 4th tour win
A fter a very full spate of nocturnal activity it was good to see a full party of Nomads fit and well to play on Monday. Skipper Michael Blumberg and Geoff Evans agreed to a 35 overs' each match with no limit on bowlers and Nomads batted first. Nigel Hussey guided a slow long hop to Gully as if conducting catching practice and David Williams miscued a drive to extra cover.Bill Johnson smote some mighty blows but then in hitting a six over midwicket lost his balance and knocked the bails off! Peerless mishit a cut to Geoff Evans and it was left to Jamie Dixon and Kevin Smith to partner Ross Ormiston in two decent stands which took us to 158-7. With the skipper at the wicket with Ross at the end of the next over a discussion was held as to how many overs were left. Eventually the scorer and his helper agreed and informed the umpires and all that one over remained so after much scampering to and fro the Nomads innings was closed at 166-7 however during tea another count was made of the overs and it was found that Nomads had batted but 33 overs. somewhat generously Geoff Evans agreed to bat the same. While Nomads had been batting John Hardy had made to walk out the middle and umpire only to be stung on his foot by a bee but worse he then went into serious relapse as his body had an allergic reaction to the sting so he went to hospital. He bravely returned to field at the ned of the game.
With John away Nomads were reduced to three bowlers and these did admirably. Had first David Williams and then Bill Johnson(a caught & bowled chance) not dropped two early miscued skyers from Gaham Ward the innings may have lasted a lot less time for Ward went to hit 53 before being caught by Hugo Morris on the mid wicket boundary. The run out by Bill Johnson of young Harry Marshall put an end to the hosts' ambitions and the innings fizzled out some 24 short to give a weary Nomads side another win to finish off amost enjoyable tour.
