Nomads win by way of a curious retirement

On a beautiful sunny and warm day the skipper won the toss and elected to bat first.Runs proved difficult to come by early on as accurate bowling, unfamiliarity with the Alfas pitch bounce and the lush grass outfield stifled Nomads' ambition. After 11.4 overs Ben Ralph was first out with the score 34. Next was Nigel Hussey (37) with the  score 76 after 18.5 overs. Stuart Reeve energised the innings, scoring 6 boundaries as he made 36 off 15 balls before miscuing and giving a leading edge catch to the bowler,135-4. Mark Firth (33 runs off 13 balls) and Kyle Bradley(25 runs off 36 balls) took the total to 184 which most pundits thought was some 20/30 below par as the opposition included several 1st XI batsmen and few of the tradional XL club older members.

Forty Club maintained a good run rate in response but a couple of run outs and wickets for Firth, Hussey and Reeve reduced Forty Club to 86-5 off 14.4 overs. Christian Muñoz was motoring to a big score helped by being dropped on the boundary when having reached 64, he was retired out. Nomads then took three  quick wickets so the final pair needed 48 runs to win. The 'Red Baron' Chris Cooper was dropped early on but then played an inspired innings backed by no 11 Ames. The skipper rotated the bowlers but without success until Nick Broadbent with the third ball of the last over trapped Ames lbw. He had faced 28 balls for 3 runs leaving the Red Baron on 48 not out off 29 balls, this last pair had added 39 runs. Nomads had won by 8 runs. After the match Geoff Evans, the Forty Club skipper, had difficulty explaining that retirement of Muñoz!

One brilliant over sets Nomads onward to victory

Nomads skipper Bill Johnson won the toss and elected to bat not always the best strategy on the second morning of a tour. In the event half the side were out for a mere 48 runs off 15 overs. The innings was rescued by Bill Johnson and Mark Firth who added 81 off 17.2 overs. A cameo from Jamie Roper(27 runs off 11 balls) helped take the score to 177-8 leaving the skipper undefeated on 46. Once again the pundits considered this total way below par given the strength of the Sporting Alfas batting.

For seven overs Alfas' openers maintained a run rate of 7 per over helped by two wayward overs from Jamie Roper. Everything changed in the course of one over from Bill Johnson. First Gary Crompton carelessly chipped the ball to Stuart Reeve at short midwicket. Two balls later Ross Ormiston took a great catch to send Kieran Perman back to the pavilion and then Ranjit Latchman took a wonderful catch at 1st slip to remove Muñoz for a duck, 3 wickets in the over, 50-3. Ross Ormiston removed Alger for for a duck, 61-4 off 12.2 overs. Kieran Roper partnered Faran Afzal to add 46 runs before Johnson struck again bowling Roper, 107-5. After a few more shots from Faran Afzal the innings fell apart, 4 wickets falling for 2 runs leaving Faran Afzal stranded on 73 not out. Alfas were all out for 120 giving Nomads victory by 57 runs. Veterans Bill Johnson and Ross Ormiston took four wickets each. This remarkable victory was celebrated throughout the evening later provoking speeches and toasts at a Bohemian Restaurant.

Dropped catches galore give Sporting Alfas victory

Once again Nomads won the toss and batted first.Kevin Smith departed early but Reeve and Hussey added37 before Hussey miscued and was caught and bowled off Harvey.Ralph joined Reeve and this partnership added 95 whereupon Ben Ralph's rash ambition with respect to Phil Penncik's lolly pops found him caught out on the square leg boundary. Mark Firth likewise was undone by Pennick stumped Laundon for just 8 at 174. The skipper joined Stu Reeve and another 64 runs were added before Bill was clean bowled by Kieran Perman whose bowling had been savaged. Stu Reeve completed a fine century and Nomads finished on 264 .

Nomads opening bowlers constrained Alfas reducing the home side to 53-3 off 13 overs. Mark Firth took one wicket and veteran Croomers a worthy two. Muñoz amd Kieran Perman repaired the innings reaching 93 off 20 overs. Thus 173 were required off 20 overs and indeed with ten overs left Alfas needed 88. However Nomads started dropping catches in the deep and although Nigel Hussey caught Muñoz for 37 off Ross Ormiston that was to be last catch taken,173-4.

Phil Pennick then joined Perman still smarting from a first ball duck on Saturday. These two ran well between the wickets exposing Nomads ancient fielding, slogged merrily as well as striking many a mighty clean hit as Nomads dropped several catches and avoided some more. (Oh for Tom Marshall and Joe O'Gorman!)

The skipper whose bowling on Saturday had won the match 4-36 off 8 overs could not stem the tide, going for 68 off 8 overs and likewise Ormiston conceded 55 off 7 overs both suffering from dropped catches. The skipper may have rotated his bowlers to greater effect on another day and indeed did not use Nigel Hussey at all. Kieran Perman profited from Nomads inadequacies to finish on 137 not out including 5 sixes with his partner undefeated on 31. This pair had added 92 off 10 overs in fading light.

Such were the depths of Nomads disappointment that they forgot to take the team tour photograph. Nevertheless as the evening progressed at the clubouse, at dinner and later at the The Church Irish Bar Nomads spirits revived for apart from those dreadful dropped catches this had been a highly enjoyable tour.

Many thanks to Sporting Alfas for their warm hospitality and competitive cricket.
