Nomads in Spain March 7th -12th 2019 L'Alfas del Pi

 MARCH  2019

On past visits to Sporting Alfas the Friday and Monday sides were seriously 'weak medium' and rather ancient and the Sunday 2nd XI totally different to the Saturday 1st XI. In recent years this has changed and this March the four elevens were broadly similar in strength with a top 1st XI batsman playing on Friday and also on Monday. Nomads thus beat the 1st XI on Saturday but lost the other three matches.

Faran century takes Alfas to victory

A sprinkler malfunction left the run up at the 'pavilion' wet delaying the start of play and so a 35/35 game was played rather than the usual 40/40.   Nomads won the toss and elected to bat first. There were three cameos from Ben Palphs, Ross Ormiston and Bill Johnson but no one built a big innings and the final score posted was probably some 30 runs short of par. At a crucial period in the the innings, 11th over to the 21st, the run rate slumped to barely 3 an over.

The wet run up messed up Sajjad Shawl's run up and his effectiveness.Tom Brockton removed opener Sawyer cheaply and Mark Firth bowled a tidy spell without any luck.Faran Afzal sailed along compiling useful partnerships with Jack Perman, Shenkman and Harvey. The introduction of Nigel Hussey and Ben Raphs proved costly, 7 overs for 69 runs and although a returning Sajjad removed Ben Marriner,149-4 off 25.5 overs and Bill Johnson and Ross Ormiston bowled tidily there was no stopping Faran. He strode majesticaly to a century(13 x 4s,4 x 6s) to win the match with two overs remaining. Close observers did wonder whether the wicket keeper had missed a couple of chances to remove Faran.

This is probably the first time ever that Nomads had lost the Friday match, a disappointing start to the tour.

Nomads dined at Dominoes Restaurant where Sajjad has an enduring empathy with the Nepalese waitresses and Mr and Mrs Geoff Evans joined us.

Mark Firth & Bill Johnson destroy Alfas batting

Bill Johnson was appointed captain for the day and promptly lost the toss. Alfas batted first. Sajjad bowling from the other end this time refound his rythm and with Mark Frith bowling his slow left arm to good effect from the Pavilion end  Alfas were soon in trouble losing 4 wickets for 26 runs, 3 to Frith and 1 to Sajjad. These two ended up with excellent figures Sajjad 7 1 9 1, Firth 7 3 15 3. Adam Alger restored the innings but on reaching 45 slog swept Jake Perman who changed allegiances for the day to deep square leg where Hugo Morris took a very good catch, 64-5. Bill Johnson had replaced Sajjad and now ran through the rest of the batting recording 5-15 so the innings ended on 92 all out.

Kevin Smith opened with Ben Ralphs but perished early bowled by Kieran Perman. Graham Howe joined Ben and these two quickly reached the target in the 17th over so Nomads had won by 9 wickets.

Nomads celebrated this win with a fine dinner at Enriques Restaurant followed by some at the Cuba Bar.

Nomads batting implodes,Alfas prevail despite Mark Firth's fourfer

The Golfers event forced the Sunday game to start late and so a 30/30 format was agreed.

Kevin Smith was appointed Skipper for the day and duly won the toss and batted. Ranjit Latchman opened with Sajjad and was soon striking the ball with a panache that belied his 73 years. Big hitter Sajjad struggled to fine form perhaps testament to the previous nights activities and he was caught after making 6 whereupon his companion of the previous night, club skipper Brockers, was soon bowled also for 6, 34-2Kyle Bradley  added 24 with Ranjit before being bowled for 16. Mark Firth joined  Ranjit but these two both fell a run apart 84-4. Jon Thornton was run out for a duck so half the side were gone for 84. Nigel Hussey and Ben Ralphs set about rebuilding the innings but Ben fell, caught behind off Dell at 105. Nigel had added 24 with guest Rob Dhondai. After the 5th ball of  of the 28th over Nigel informed Dondhai that he would be running off the last ball so as to keep the strike. This he did but Dondhai remained rigid in his crease so Nigel was run out when his scoring capability was much needed for the last two overs. In the event the Club President and Dondhai added  a miserable 2 runs  off the last two overs. Nomads totalled a seriously inadequate 132.

Alfas opened with two mature cricketers. Nomads skipper, incongruously attired in shorts, hatched a plan." Keep these two openers in as long as  possible giving as few runs away as possible".  Nomads were short on bowling but had Sajjad and Mark  to 'clean up' later. The plan worked quite well but was sabotaged by the Nomads wicket keeper standing up to occassional seamer Ben Ralphs and conceding 12 extras. At 47 Hulls retired and his partner was out at the same score lbw to Brockton. When Mark Firth came on he took three wickets in his first over and could have had Jack Perman caught as Ranjit with a sore right foot just failed to jump and hang on to the catch over his head,a costly miss as it turned out, 66-4(5).

The skipper now made a strange decision.  Rather than continue with Mark and hopefully win the match before supporting bowlers needed to be used he removed him from the attack and Perman prospered even though he played and missed a good deal at Sajjad's bowling. Two overs from Brockers with a sore shoulder were expensive and by the time Mark was reintroduced and trapped Jack Perman lbw the game was almost over, 120-5. Another five expensive balls from Brockers and the game was lost with Firth still to bowl 2 overs. His figures were  4-13 off 4 overs!

This was probably the only time in 116 years that Nomads had been skippered by a cricketer in shorts and the result was an unnecessary defeat!

Nomads dined well at Paulinos before imbibing at The Church bar.

Skipper & Chairman take Alfas to victory

With surplus players Nomads lent Simon Barter to the home side and played Matt Jefferson. Skipper Tom Brockton won the toss and decided to bat. Despite the extremely friendly bowling the skipper contrived to be bowled for 13. Jon Thornton and Kyle Bradley plundered the home attack to good effect indeed this was a Kyle innings unlike almost any other previously witnessed when in Nomads colours. However while Kyle studied his boot laces Nigel Hussey ran the full length of the pitch twice only to be just run out. Tough on Nigel. In the 35th over the skipper declared, a generous call.

Phil Pennick opened with Kevin Laundon and these two added a solid 49 before Mark Firth bowled Pennick. Ormiston removed the 'Red Baron' Chris Cooper,77-2. This brought Christian Munoz to the crease and he set about the bowling with power and style reaching 103 off a mere 65 balls. At the other end Kevin Laundon now batted with increasing confidence and the two of them put on 140 runs before Laundon miscued Ormiston and was caught by Mark Firth,218-3. Munoz kept the strike adding 18 runs for victory, he hit  6 x 6s and 14x 4s. Sporting Alfas had won with 8 overs to spare. A very generous declaration indeed.

Nomads dined at the Katmandu Restaurant and a few continued at The Church Bar.

Nomads would like to thank Sporting Alfas for their warm hospitality and for the excellent Cricket Teas provided on all four days.
