Nomads fail to take last wicket

After a very enjoyable start to the 2014 tour the day before at Pepe’s celebrating the birthday of Kevin Smith Nomads ended agonisingly 1 wicket short of what would have been a deserved victory vs The 40 Club of Spain in the opening match of the Spain tour and the 2014 season. Winning the toss and opting to bat first at the Clive Woodbridge Oval, Nomads suffered an early set back when the classy Ranjit Latchman had his off-stump pegged back by Ravi Panchal, who has been playing cricket for Stanmore in the Middlesex County League. Hussey and Style then forged a partnership of just under 50 for the next wicket when Hussey larruped a full toss from Chris Cooper straight to Jonny Braithwaite who held onto the firm drive. Hussey on his way for an enterprising 39 from just 32 balls.

The impetus was continued by the mighty Sajjad Shawl, promoted up the order to accelerate the innings. This he did in fine style scoring 41 from just 20 balls including a couple of trademark massive 6’s before he was finally out top-edging another intended maximum, keeper Ward back-peddling to claim the catch. Nomads were now in the ascendency and were ticking along nicely at 5 runs per over and after 27 overs were well placed at 130-3. Style was then on his way for a gritty half century, the first 50 of 2014 for a Nomads player.

Enter captain Brockton and Northwood star Stuart Reeve who added a further 87 in 13 overs to increase the Nomads score to 217-4 after 40 overs when the declaration was made. Brockton ending on 58 not out and Reeve 35. Although the 40 club would have in the region on 45 overs to score the runs, the Nomads side knew that based on previous experiences the 10 wickets would be hard to come by.

Shawl and Reeve took the new cherry for the Nomads and Shawl in particular looked in fine form, swinging the ball away at good pace. He accounted for Ward with a lovely piece of bowling, Ward snicking to 3rd slip where Nigel Hussey held a fine catch. Former league captain Kevin Laundon walked in at number 3, and after 1 ball walked out! Shawl producing a vicious lifting delivery that Laundon could only fend to the bucket hands of Kie Farrell at 2nd slip. 40 club on the rack at 14-2, 217 was looking a long way off!

Brockton and Smith kept up the high standard of bowling, Smith bowling an immaculate line to claim 3 wickets in a fine spell of bowling and although Hussey was off-colour with the ball as the 20 overs started the 40 club were a long way off the pace at 85-5. Looking for wickets Brockton turned again to his trump card Shawl and he answered in the affirmative taking the wickets of Cooper and Phull. Reeve had just dismissed captain Geoff Evans who had soaked up 63 balls for his 29 (and took 31 balls to get off the mark!). However the visitors were faced with dismissing the limpet like Bobby Nix, and although Shawl, Smith and Brockton threw everything they had at him the former deep sea diver remained resolute. Even some crafty “chirping” from keeper Kevin Smith failed to move Nix. 40 club closing on 169-9 after 44 overs and Nomads had missed an opportunity to record their opening win of the season.

Nomads fail to score enough runs..again

With no Bill Johnson, who had failed to arrive on his scheduled flight (or arrive at all as we would latterly discover) Nomads recalled President Michael Blumberg for the show-piece fixture of the tour vs the Sporting Alfaz 1st XI. Alfaz had put out a strong side featuring a number of Spanish international cricketers as well as the ever-green ex county pro Paul Taylor. Brockton won the toss and elected to bat & Reeve and Farrell opened up for the visitors. The latter looked in fine touch pouncing on two short balls from Kieran Perman to get his score underway. However, Farrell was undone by the variable bounce in the wicket and was taken at square leg for just 8 miss-timing an attempted pull shot.

Brockton joined Reeve and the pair progressed the score to 59 before Reeve was LBW to the impressive leg-spin of Gary Crompton. Hussey came and went quickly and the Nomads were in spot of bother at 75-3 after 19 overs. Brockton and experienced ex-Scotland pro Andrew Smith then added some much needed acceleration to the Nomads innings adding 70 for the 5th wicket. Smith was his usual pugnacious self, but both struggled to score fluently against slow left armer Taylor. Runs were easier to come by from skipper Fletcher and off spinner Mohammed, and Brockton reached his 50 from73 balls with a square drive for 4 off Crompton.

Alas, both Brockton and Smith were dismissed in quick succession for 63 and 34 respectively and Rupert Style then ran out the big hitting Shawl. 200 was now looking improbable, but Style batted with rare aggression to get Nomads up to 194-7 from 40 overs. The injury to Kevin Smith who was struck on the back of the head while batting was unfortunate but would also mean the now “groggy” Smith would take no further part in the game. Nigel Hussey took the gloves for the duration of the Alfaz innings.

Reeve and Shawl took the new ball for the visitors once again, but Reeve was off-colour sending down a succession of low full tosses and half volleys that Brook tucked into. Shawl removed Phil Pennick, who had often been the thorn in the Nomads side, for just 8 with a sharp nip-backer and Oliver Croom-Johnson was rewarded with a wicket from his first delivery as Chris Munoz snicked behind where the reliable Ranjit Latchman pouched a fine catch at wide first slip.

The Alfaz side were always up with the rate, although Andrew Smith bowled impressively. The returning Reeve did gain some modicum of revenge by clean bowling Gary Crompton for 49 (who looked a class act from the first ball of his innings) but by then Alfaz were in the ascendency. Shawl charged in gamefully throughout and beat the edge of captain Fletcher’s bat on more occasions than one could count, however he cashed in against the unfortunately wayward Reeve.

Alfaz eventually ran out winners by 5 wickets with 3 overs left. Nomads were left ruing another defeat by the Saturday XI, but with two matches left were hoping to end on a high.

Nomads bowlers too good on Sunday!

Nomads recorded their first victory of the Spain tour with a resounding 135 run win vs the Sporting Alfaz Sunday XI. Skippered by Kevin Laundon the Alfaz Sunday XI were in the ascendency early on with Nomads President Blumberg smiting a crunching cut shot for 4 before being unfortunately dismissed. Kevin Smith was also soon to follow and Nomads were in some trouble at 28-2. However valuable contributions from Vince Gavin, Sajjad Shawl, Rupert Style, Nigel Hussey, Kie Farrell and Tom Brockton allowed Nomads to reach a very credible 213-7 from 40 overs.

Against such a strong bowling line up Laundon picked a rather puzzling batting order and when his two best players were eventually at the crease the match as a contest was effectively over. Shawl and Reeve found good pace and rhythm to account for McInstry, (caught yet again by Latchman) mad Irishman Bryne and Ashraf, bowled by an absolute beauty from Reeve & then Brockton got in on the act with his in-swingers to pick up 4 wickets for just 6 runs.

Andrew Smith was not at his best after a rather heavy night, but Nigel Hussey proved what a golden-arm he has, picking up 2 scalps to finish the game. Alfaz bundled out for just 78 with 10+ overs of their innings unused. Kevin Smith impressed behind the stumps on his return to the side, proving “when on tour, always pick your best keeper”. The side + supporters celebrated with a fine meal at Dutch restaurant, 'Something Else'

 Nomads win final match

With the tour approaching its conclusion Nomads recorded their second win in as many days with a resounding victory over the Sporting Alfaz mid-week XI. Brockton again won the toss and elected to bat. Nomads accumulated 213 runs in their 40 overs for the loss of 9 wickets. Captain Kevin Laundon bowled impressively to take a 5 wicket haul (including a hat trick – Latchman, Farrell & Kevin Smith) but runs from Andrew Smith, Stuart Reeve, Nigel Hussey and Vince Gavin put Nomads in the box seat.

Once again Laundon opted for a rather strange top order and needing 5+ runs an over from the start the dour combination of McKindstry, Nix and Wambeke occupying 87 balls for just 40 runs to put the Midweek XI behind the 8 ball. Star player Ravi Panchal was royally cleaned up first ball, effectively ending the Midweek XI’s chances of a win, but Chris “The Red Barron” Cooper swung the willow, connecting with a few lusty blows before he was also bowled. Geoff Evans also resisted with a gritty 31 to add some respectability to the total before he was bowled by the impressive Andrew Smith.

Kevin Laundon walked in having registered two ducks in his previous two knocks during the Nomads tour of Spain and he nearly made it three from three as Vince Gavin dropped what would have been the catch of the tour at mid-wicket. Laundon, rode his luck and went on to score a belligerent 44 before he was LBW to Latchman and Rob Dondai / Mark Perman batted out the final few overs to finish on 163-9 and Nomads a deserved victory by exactly 50 runs. Brockton and Hussey shared 6 wickets in this convincing win.

Our thanks to the Sporting Alfaz teams for making our trip another memorable one both on and off the field. Also many thanks to our scorers Nigel Green & Bill Rodwell as well as the colourful umpire and lover of fine red wine Geoff Knight.
