Nomads stall in chase of modest total

Nomads lost an entertaining fixture by the slender margin of 15 runs at the pretty setting of Maidenhead & Bray Cricket Club on Sunday. With a poor forecast on the cards, most of the players were surprised the game went ahead, let alone completed in its entirety without a break for rain a tall. M&B skipper Matt Armstrong won the toss and elected to bat on a decent looking, if a little green surface. The fixture did start 30 mins late due to a damp outfield.

Nomads opened up with the evergreen Jemile Al-Darraji and accurate slow bowler Andy Smith. Both bowled immaculately and Al-Darraji was rewarded with an early wicket, Brockton taking the catch back-peddling at point. However the home side made slow but steady progress. The introduction of old stager Chris Page did acceleratethe rate a little but he picked up wickets at regular intervals in his 8 overspell. Chris Royals was very accurate and Nomads caught well, Olly Smith taking two very good catches and his father a tumbling effort at gully to dismiss the obdurate opening batsman. Al-Darajji returned to take a couple more scalps in an impressive 8 over spell.

Some late acceleration was provided from the leg-spin of former Lord’s Ground staff cricketer Iggy Chouwdhury and the home side closed on a slightly under par 168 from their 40 overs. With a slow-ish outfield and big playing surface Nomads would need to score at just over 4 an over to overhaul this total.

Chesham 1st XI cricketer Chris Hedges and the in-form Vic Kandampully opened up for Nomads and against the Aussie overseas Decker and the tall left armer Aparvoo. The pair batted watchfully and rotated the strike smartly taking quick singles at every available opportunity. The partnership realised 67 when Hedges (40) pulled a rank long hop to Becker who pouched the chance with ease. The game then turned as Ross Ormiston called Kandampully through for a suicidal single (to the overseas stationed at mid-wicket) then left a delivery from the offie who had just come on. Unfortunately it crashed into his off stump. Nomads were now 67-3 having lost 3 wickets for 0 runs in 3 overs.

Saurabh Wahi departed cheaply, also run out taking a quick single to the Aussie at mid wicket (we are not learning here lads). Some rebuilding needed and the Smiths did this, but their watchfulness resulted in the rate climbing significantly. Olly looked to take the attack to the home side and hit several clean blows for 4, but both perished in quick succession for 24 and 15 respectively, The rate was now over 7 and Brockton and Al-Darraji had a battle on their hands against the experienced left arm spinner and skipper Armstrong's seam. Brockton was stumped giving the left armer the charge and Al-Darraji could not get the accurate bowling away meaning Nomads closed 15 short on 153 at the end of their allotted 40 overs.

M&B generously bought a couple of jugs for the Nomads to enjoy, and most of the players stuck around for a couple of hours after the game watching the end of the Open at Royal Birkdale. Our thanks to Maidenhead & Bray CC for hosting us again, and we wish them well for the rest of their league campaign.
