Stowe Templars prevail by two wickets in thriller
Nomads arrived at Stowe's attractive and impressive ground to the unwelcome news that opening bowler Vib Yadav had twisted an ankle, and that we had only 9 men on the ground - due in part to a very unfortunate breakdown in communication, which meant that our wicket-keeper was entirely unaware of his selection and was therefore at work. Not an auspicious beginning!
With emergency replacement Rupert Style hot-footing it up the motorway to Stowe, Nomads were relieved to win the toss and bat.
A rain delay took almost an hour out of the game, but on commencement, Jack Massey and Vic Kandampully settled nerves by batting throughout the morning session to allow Nomads to enjoy a delicious luncheon from the comfortable position of 93/0 from 20 overs. Massey in particular had been brutal in punishing any short balls from the triumvirate of Templar spinners - as he reached his 50 before lunch.
After lunch, Stowe Templars fought back via a pair of sensational catches. Massey's searing cover drive was well held, inches from the turf, by the Templars skipper to end Jack's fun for a well-made 57. Vib Yadav (21) was then acrobatically snaffled one handed at square leg by Markham. When Vic Kandampully (48) was followed back to the pavilion by Rupert Style (who had thankfully arrived just before lunch), Nomads' position was looking more precarious, at 145/4.
Happily, Jemile Al-Derraji contributed a measured 59* in company with Olly Smith (20) and Tom Marshall, to take Nomads well past 200. An attempt to promote Ben Smith for some pre-declaration hitting unfortunately was stymied by a poorly timed call of nature! Nevertheless Nomads were able to declare on 236/6 from 51 overs - a total that would have been much higher were it not for Templars' accurate spinners and some truly excellent fielding.
After a delicious tea, Tom Marshall took the new ball and immediately found some joy as Wilson was trapped LBW from the first ball of the innings. Marshall's pace and movement was a constant threat and he soon picked up two further wickets, both caught by stand-in keeper Vib Yadav. At 13/3 the Templars were rocking, but Saunders and Hulbert began to resurrect the innings, riding their luck against Marshall throughout his superb opening spell of 10-4-30-3 and milking the other bowling. The dangerous Saunders was eventually cleaned up by Smith for 49 but Hulbert was reprieved on at least two occasions by Nomads fielders. This meant that the boundaries continued to flow, so that, at the start of the 20 overs, Templars required just 110 for victory whereas Nomads wanted 6 wickets.
The introduction of Chris Page excited the younger Templars to a frenzy of boundary hitting. But in between some hefty sixes, the wily Page snared two middle order wickets. At the other end, Ben Smith hit the pitch hard in the course of several tight overs, culminating in a thick edge to gully where Chris Page leapt to secure a catch above his head.
Nomads had found that trying to restrict the youthful and hard hitting Hulbert to singles was easier said than done, and, as Templars approached victory, Marshall was reintroduced and the field was brought back up. However, despite a direct hit run out from Jack Massey, Nomads were unable to dislodge the centurion Hulbert. He finished with a match-defining 115* as Templars secured a narrow win by 2 wickets, to the significant relief of the Templars #11.
It was in good spirits that Nomads and Templars repaired to the Red Lion in Evenley for ale, fodder and a wide-ranging and friendly post-game discussion.
