All-round Ross too good for Barnes

Nomads recorded a resounding victory at Barnes CC on bank holiday Monday, the game played in good spirits under largely blue skies and fortunately warmer weather.
Sporting a strong side with plenty of batting and bowling options Nomads skipper Tom Brockton won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. The wicket, as usual at Barnes looked a belter, and openers Ormiston / Kandampully looked to take full toll against the amusingly named Christopher Perfect. His line and length was certainly not, and his 2 overs were dispatched for 20 before he was removed from the attack.

Barnes skipper Alex Foulds took on the challenge himself and in tandem with the impressive Redman did offer some control for the next hour or so. Kandampully was well snaffled behind by experienced Aussie Mike Harriman via an under-edge, but Ormiston and Smith (combined age of 127) batted with an air of supreme ease. Both players were looking in good touch and Ormiston brought up a well crafted half century with a spanking drive for 4 off Foulds.

A change in the bowling did bring Barnes a much needed wicket with Tom Fahy's leggies accounting for Smith and Redman luring Ormiston into an injudicious drive which was pouched by the Barnes skipper at the 2nd attempt at cover.  However, with full batting stocks Andy Hill, Tom Liversidge and big Sean Reilly kept up the scoring rate, all chipping in with important runs in quick time. Robbie Blackburn & Rupert Style supplied the coup de grass at the end of the innings striking 28 from the final 3 overs before the declaration to get Nomads up to and over 250. A total of 258-6 from 43 overs was certainly better than par despite the friendly nature of the wicket. Barnes skipper Alex Foulds fully deserved his 4 wicket haul for his efforts, although even he went at 6 an over.

After a rustic DIY tea Blackburn and Barnes Common all-rounder Suraj Vithlani took the new cherry for the Nomads and while Vithlani was a little off colour Blackburn was quickly into his stride clean bowling Bowles and Bell early in the piece and then bouncing out young Middlesex cricketer Glenn Leman with a pacy short ball that the batsman could only spoon to Vic Kandampully at short mid-wicket.

Alex Foulds and Trevelyan Ward then looked to counter attack in the face of some accurate bowling and assertive field placings, but alas both were undone by Brockton (who had replaced Blackburn after his 3 wicket burst) who had both Barnes men caught at mid-off and mid-on respectfully.  With Andrew Smith wheeling away at the other end only Mike Harriman looked to bat with any level of aggression and Smith's spell of 8 overs went for just 13 runs.

Christopher Perfect completed a less than memorable day with a 36 ball duck, bowled by Smith offering no shot, and Harriman was left to shepherd the tail in the final overs but was deprived of the strike.

Brockton turned to Kiwi Ross Ormiston's leg spin and he immediately knocked over Cassellous and then had Tom Fahy caught at first slip.  With just 2 overs left Ormiston removed the final man, Redman who was smartly caught by Saurabh Wahi behind the stumps to give Nomads a resounding 153 run victory and with clouds / rain looming Nomads retreated to the comfort of the Barnes CC bar to celebrate yet another win in SW London.
Our thanks to Barnes Cricket Club for yet another enjoyable encounter. We wish them success in the Middlesex County League this season.
