Charles Fellows-Smith 6 wicket haul inspires Nomads to victory

Nomads got back to winning ways vs Harpenden on Monday, which was the first day of the Harpendencricket week. Under blue skies and warm summer sunshine Nomads won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat on what looked like, and was an absolute belter.

Despite losing Jeremy Lascelles for a 2nd ball globe Kie Farrell and Tom Brockton batted assertively and pushed the score to 110 after 21 overs when Brockton's poor judgement in trying to late-cut a straight ball brought about his downfall for a well crafted 60 with 12 boundaries.
Farrell followed shortly after for a gritty 48 and Jemile Al-Darajji and new fish Jamie Mann then added 90 in a wonderful partnership to get Nomads up and over the 200 mark. Alas, Jemile went in the hamstring going for a quick 2 and his injury forced him to retire hurt and he would take no further part in the match which would also leave the visitors a bowler light.

Chingford player Mike Blake then accompanied Jamie Mann to his debut half century and the declaration with Nomads posting a credible 226-4 from 43 overs. Cardy with 2-30 from 10 overs was the pick of the Harpenden bowling line up although special mention should be made to Warwickshire u17 cricketer Garrett who looks like a cricketer of some promise.

Chasing a par score on such a good track Harpenden operns Bradley and Josephs added 60 for the first wicket and with no Jemile the Nomads bowling line up looked a little thin. However Brockton trapped Josephs LBW for 19 and the match started to change in the visitors favour with the introdction of Charles Fellows-Smith who from ball 1 looked to be in fine form. He struck immediately to dismiss Bradley for 31, then followed up with the scalp of Newmann.
Nomads were now back in the game and some impressive fielding from Chesham leggie Chris Royals looked to stem the flow of runs from Harpenden pro Galloway who Fellows-Smith then trapped LBW the following ball. A key wicket and Royals then knocked over skipper Randall the following over with his googily.

However, an assertive partnership between the earlier new ball pairing of Smith and Garrett looked to get the home side back in the game until the 2nd spell of experienced campaigner Chris Page caused havoc with the two young bowlers. A firm drive parried by page was picked up in the covers by skipper Brockton whose accurate throw found Smith just short of his groud and he was run out for 49. Fellows-Smith then took matters into his own hands to claim his 5th and 6th wickets in quick succession clean bowling both Card and Gill on his way to 6-78 from 15 overs.

It was fitting that with overs running out Fellows-Smith would end the game, young Garrett keep to retain the strike called no11 cramer through for what looked like asuicidal single and the experienced Fellows-Smith swooped to get the ball into the safe gloves of Kevin Smith who completed the run out. Harpenden all out for 208 with 1.4 overs remaining and Nomads victorious by the slender margin of 18 runs.

All of the Nomads (even the injured Jemile who had been perched on a bar stool for much of the afternoon) stayed long into the evening enjoying the Harpenden hospitality as well as the post cricket BBQ which was kindly laid on by the local butcher. Our thanks to Harpenden for a memorable fixture and we look forward to resuming our friendly cameraderie with them next season.
