Nomads reach semi finals

Three indoor games at the same time in the giant indoor tennis centre

Nomads competed in the inaugural indoor six a side International Cricket Winter Cup in Brno on Saturday March 8th.Not a great day for England at rugby or cricket at international level but in Brno cricket was the winner. Twelve clubs from UK,Czech Republic and Slovakia played through group rounds, quarters, semis and on to the final. Polygons including four sometime, past and present, Nomads were beaten by Barclays Capital skippered by a former Wanstead CC captain who was christened for the day as Thierry Henry. And he had played indoor cricket against Nomads in the original MCC League in the old indoor cricket school, bare breeze block walls and real cricket balls-when men were real men!

There was a huge variation in standard at Brno between accomplished cricketers and local learners yet it worked out very well, a credit to the organisers!

Nomads ably lead by Mark Surridge a former club skipper of Nomads consisted of four cricketers from Vienna who had driven to Brno, three of whom had played for Nomads before and two locals, well Indian medics studying in Brno. Most creditably they reached the semi finals to be well beaten by Polygons who included  four former/current Nomads but they had the scalp of Barclays Capital to boast about in the group round robins earlier in the day.   Two other Nomads played for Ashington CC from Northumbria.

Simmo' of Polygons was most dischuffed "I've played First class cricket, you know. You should be filming me"! All of which totally unimpressed the Czech TV camera man.
