Only Offer and Plant prosper on a sunny day dictated by bowlers

Nomads came out 2nd best against a strong Paralytics side at Beddington CC. Paralytics, managed on the dayby Nomads own Geoff Knight were almost all current or ex Surrey Championship crickets so were a formidable unit. Brockton won the toss and unsurprisingly inserted the Paralytics.

The opening stand of 82 between experienced Surrey over 50’s batsman Carl Offer and Vyas was rather one sided as the pair added 82 with Vyas contributing only 17. Richard Clark struggled early on, but grafted gamefully and ended up bowling an improved spell. Vyas was spectacularly caught by Mike Plant and then Jamie Lane stumped Gould for a second ball duck just before lunch. Nomads buoyed by some strong fielding and an accurate spell of bowling from Andrew Smith, but Paralytics in the box seat at 85-2. After the lunch break wickets and runs came at quite a rate. Offer was dismissed for 78 and Plant/Brockton rolled through the middle order. Unfortunately the Nomads fielding became rather sub-standard and Robbie Blackburn was to end wicketless despite bowling with great gusto and pace for 14 overs. On another day Blackburn would have been rewarded with 4 or 5 wickets. Paralytics declaring on the stroke of 50 overs with 184-7. On such a slow wicket/outfield this was closer to 240. Nomads would have to be at their very best to overhaul such a total.

Debutant Mike Blake opened up with Steve Dummer but their partnership was to be a short one as Blake chopped on from the bowling on Nicky Clark (no, not the hairdresser, Richard Clark’s younger brother and Sutton 1st XI cricketer). Nomads struggled with the accurate bowling losing wickets at regular intervals and not offering much resistance. Chambers, Javed, Smith and Lane all perished cheaply. Dummer was then dismissed by the well travelled and experienced Chris Page as he tried and failed to clear the in-field. Nomads were 48-6 and scoring at barely 1.5 runs per over! Brockton and Plant then added 60 in a robust partnership, but by then the 20 overs had already started and the vultures were circling the carcass as the Nomads lower order struggled to deal with the accurate bowling of Page and Reeves.

Plant was bowled by the returning Clark for a well crafted 44, Christopher Wilson inexplicably given out LBW allegedly off the middle of his bat for a second ball duck and Blackburn taken at cover after some lusty blows. However, Richard Clark was equal to the task, blocking out the final over with skipper Brockton to ensure a draw was the result. Paralytics taking the plaudits for a very professional performance with bat, ball and in the field. Nomads retired to the bar to lick their wounds and were still doing so after a very enjoyable BBQ come 10pm! Our thanks to Beddington CC, Geoff Knight and his Paralytics for a very enjoyable day in sunny Beddington.
