Nomads lose the plot as 8th wicket pair take Sherfield to victory

Nomads returned to the idyllic village of Sherfield-Upon-Loddon on Sunday to play for the “Michael Blumberg Tankard” which the visitors won in their inaugural match in 2015. After much wet weather in the Hampshire area so far this summer it had taken a good degree of hard work, blood, sweat & tears from messers Dummer and Gibson to get the ground anywhere near ready for cricket. A lot of rolling on the square had resulted in a good cricket wicket and the warm weather (+ cold Peroni) that greeted the teams certainly lifted the spirits of both sides.

Nomads won the toss and elected to bat, Smith & Liversidge opening up. Their stand was a relatively short one with Smith well taken for 11 at mid-on looking to go over the top. Brockton joined the other Tom and the pair forged a good assertive partnership, taking a liking to young Angus Baker’s leg spin (a cricketer who the home side spoke of with real promise before the game). Brockton was undone by one that kept low for 35 and Hugo Morris strode out to the middle.

The pair both crafted well deserved half centuries, Morris was the aggressor while Liversidge batted with skill and dexterity to reach 64 before he was fantastically stumped by former Bromley 1st XI keeper Rob Dummer. Morris was also stumped, in more comical circumstances and the side had lost two very quick and important wickets. Ormiston realised quick runs were needed and gave it some long handle favoring the cover region and also biffing it over the top to good effect. However he also fell to young Baker for an aggressive 24. With something of a tail the side subsided a little with Chris Page & Iggy Chowdhury both out cheaply. Michael Blumberg and Oliver Croom-Johnson got the Nomads up to 222-8 before the troops were called in.

We then had tea, and what a tea it was ! Perhaps the Nomads lingered a little too long enjoying the sunshine, and the feast on offer, but the side was a little flat upon taking the field, no doubt with very full bellies. Was this a tactic from the hosts?!? Croom-Johnson and the skipper opened the bowling and although both took a wicket and not too many runs were added the feeling was that the home side had a fair bit left in the tank with regards to their batting stocks.

The Nomads new ball attack was replaced by the experienced pair of Page and Smith, many thousands of league wickets between them. Unfortunately neither was at their absolute best and it became apparent that the Nomads fielding was going to be under some scrutiny from the younger members of the Sherfield side as there were plenty of 1s and 2s on offer to the elder statesmen. Chowdhury and Fanthorpe, both playing their first games of the season were targeted and the Nomads began to wilt under the onslaught from the hosts. Chowdhury gained a modicum of revenge with a stumping and a very nonchalant one handed caught and bowled. Page, likewise dismissed Steve Dummer (caught behind off an under edge, well taken by Richard Mackey), and Swift (caught Morris on the deep mid wicket boundary) as well as Chris Wilson palpably leg before (Ladbrokes and William Hill had already paid out on the mode of dismissal before the game).

Nomads were well and truly back in the game, the prize wicket was now Rob Dummer, no doubt cleverly held back to finish the game by Captain Gibson. That he did, despite a vociferous appeal for caught behind and another for LBW. He punished the bad ball and in tandem with young Angus Baker led the home side to victory with 3 overs remaining. The usually reliable Professor Page had been flogged for 70 in just 11 overs and the re-introduction of Smith & finally skipper Brockton had only accelerated the home sides charge to victory, with just a couple of wickets in hand.

Post match Chris Wilson spoke eloquently and aptly the man himself presented the “Michael Blumberg Tankard” to the winning skipper for safe keeping until 2017. Our thanks to Steve Dummer & John Gibson from Sherfield-Upon-Loddon as well as the lovely tea ladies for making such a fuss of all the cricketers and laying on such a wonderful spread. We look forward to returning next season.
